When many people think of martial arts, the first thing that comes to their mind is fighting. Many martial arts schools do not encourage fighting as their skill set is supposed to be for self-defense. Better Families Through Tae Kwon Do is a firm believer that martial arts should only be used for self-defense. Practice is necessary for everything, even for fighting. One way students can practice fighting is through sparring. Sparring is fighting in a controlled environment with gear to protect you from serious damage. Miami Tae Kwon Do school holds sparring days throughout the week.
Days in which students are sparring are on Wednesday and Thursday also known as “B” days. These days’ students bring their sparring gears in order to participate in the activity. It’s important to have your gear ready in order to be involved with sparring. Without your gear, students are not permitted to take part in sparring. Students can purchase sparring gear directly from Better Families as they conveniently provide a pro shop at the school. If for whatever reason the right size is not available, Tae Kwon Do school will order the proper gear for that student.
Miami Tae Kwon Do sparring has levels of speed and intensity in which the students go. There is half speed, three quarter speed and full speed when sparring. It’s important to have levels of speed so that students can pace themselves. Pacing speeds of fighting creates control and understanding for what they are doing. Sparring practice creates experience for students in a fighting situation. More experience a student has with sparring, the better off they are in a fighting situation. So start today and get your sparring gear from Better Families and participate in our sparring days.

Better Families Through Tae Kwon Do is a special and unique martial arts style. Most martial arts styles are about the technique and principles of it. This Miami Tae Kwon Do school follows these guidelines to a typical martial arts with their own set of principles. Most martial arts school strictly follows the code of their style and nothing else. Better Families follows the code of Tae Kwon Do along with their own principles to share for students. This martial arts school puts a strong emphasis on respect, self-discipline and students bettering their lives. As the name says; Better Families, is about bettering the lives of their students and families.
Students are encouraged to do well in school as well as behave in the household. Good behavior in the house is encouraged and rewarded with small prizes for young children. Young children are being conditioned at an early age to be respectful to others, especially elders. Creating good habits in terms of behavior and being productive goes a long way with being a successful adult. Good habits make it easier to behave well as it becomes natural for them. Better Families students behave differently as most martial artists due to their lack of aggression. One way to point out a Miami Tae Kwon Do student is their sense of confidence and positive attitude. Students with terrible attitude do not progress from one ranking to another. There is a major difference between a martial artist and a person who simply knows some kicks and punches.
This unique style has had Better Families stand out from other martial arts schools for over 20 years. There is no other Miami Tae Kwon Do school like Better Families. Teaching family values along with technique and principle is what separate this school from the rest.
Better Families wants to introduce you to Master Karen Klock-Perez. She is the daughter of the Miami Tae Kwon Do school’s owners Grand Master Diego Perez and Master Mary Beth Klock-Perez. Karen grew up in the school since it first started in 1988. Master Karen is the manager and head instructor of the Tae Kwon Do school. It is easy to find her, as she’s involved with all the school activities. Karen is not only a skilled martial artist, but a talented instructor as well.
Like the rest of her family, Karen was exposed to Tae Kwon Do at an early age as she was crawling in the karate school. As a child of both Masters, she was familiar with the curriculum. Regardless of the fact she was family, Karen went from white to black belt like everyone else. After Karen became a black belt, she chose to be around and learn from other instructors. Mast Karen Perez has learned so much over the years as a martial artist as well as instructor and continues to do so. In the 2002 she officially became a certified instructor.
At a very young age, she has accomplished a lot as an instructor. Karen was featured as “Celebrity Instructor” in a prominent Martial Arts Trade Magazine in 2010. She was also a speaker at the United Professionals National Convention in Arizona. Better Families instructor Master Karen is also an innovator as she started the groundbreaking “Tiny Dragons” program that is now being introduced to schools nationwide. Tiny Dragons is a program where 2-4 year old are taught discipline, respect, structure and martial arts. Over the years Master Karen Klock-Perez has grown to become a successful martial artist, instructor and role model in the community as she continues to improve each and everyday.
